Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the ability to question specific rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
