Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
